Case Studies

 March 31, 2008
During the afternoon/evening of March 31, (approx ~15-20 UTC), an approaching cold front collided with an outflow boundary, initiating convection directly within the testbed. Data were collected from three IP1 sites (KRSP, KCYR, and KSAO) in DCAS mode.

 April 3, 2008
Very similar to March 31, during the afternoon/evening of April 3, (approx ~22-02 UTC), storms developed along an approaching cold front as it collided with outflow boundaries, initiating convection within the testbed. Data were collected from three IP1 sites (KRSP, KCYR, and KSAO) in DCAS mode.

 May 2, 2008
On May 2, (approx ~0430-0730 UTC), storms developed along an approaching cold front. IP1 captured the southern end of a line of storms with a gustfront observed just ahead of the line. Data were collected from three IP1 sites (KRSP, KCYR, and KLWE) in DCAS mode. Data were collected from KSAO until 05 UTC.

 May 6, 2008
On May 5-6, an MCS approached from the west/northwest. A cluster of storms developed in western TX/KS and moved east during the night of May 6th. Storms were observed in the network overnight between 0530UTC and 1100UTC. Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode.

 May 7, 2008
Several severe storms moved through the network on May 7. A strong low pressure system approached OK from the west, with high instability and moisture in place across OK. Storms developed in the network by 08UTC, with strong storms observed until ~ 15UTC. A second round of even stronger storms were observed between 19-23UTC, with 3 severe hail reports and 2 severe wind reports. Numerous high wind events were observed in the radar data. Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode.

 May 27, 2008
A low pressure system approached OK from the west, with a trailing dryline across TX and stationary front across KS. Storms developed along the dryline and moved east into west central OK by 00UTC (May 27). The cluster of storms evolved into a line/bow echo as it entered the network at 06UTC. Storms moved SE through the network until 12 UTC. Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode.

 June 1, 2008
An isolated supercell moved southeast through the network during the night of May 31st between 0330 and 0730 UTC (June 1st). A stationary front was located east-west across southern KS, with an unstable air mass across OK (very large CAPE). A supercell formed in west-central OK by 0200 UTC and moved SE into the network. Several reports of 1" hail and 60mph winds were recorded within the testbed. Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode.

 June 6, 2008
A strong cold front moved through the network during the evening of June 5 between 0100 and 0500 UTC (June 6). Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode.

 June 9, 2008
A heavy rain event associated with a slow moving frontal system. Convective rain fell between 0700 and 2200 UTC. Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode.

 June 17, 2008
An MCS, convective event between 1200 UTC and 0100 UTC (June 18). Data were collected from all four IP1 sites (KCYR, KSAO, KRSP and KLWE) in DCAS mode. However, data were collected and archived only between 1200 and 1530UTC, due to sensing testing.
